About

Dr. Shawn King is an Assistant Professor at Marshall University. His research interest includes: Health Care and Social Service Access and Delivery, including Mental Health and Preventive Care, for Vulnerable and Marginalized populations including Ethnic/Racial Minorities, GLBT, Older Adults, and Individuals in Rural settings.  He has presented several papers and posters on his research at both the National and and State level.  He currently teaches at both the BSW and MSW levels.  His teaching interests include Social Work Practice, Research Methods, Qualitative Research, Program Evaluation, Social Work Management and Supervision, and Aging.

He was awarded his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University with a Minor in Research Methods and an Interdisciplinary Specialization in Aging.  Additionally, he received his Masters of Social Work from Ohio State with a concentration in clinical work, and he has a Master’s of Science in Management from Friends University with an emphasis in Human Resources and Employee Relations.  Dr. King earned a Bachelors of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Marketing and Economics from The University of Texas at Arlington.

He has worked in several managerial capacities.  His employment has included corporations such as IBM, Pepsico, Pizza Hut Corporation, Boeing, and JP Morgan Chase.  His clinical work includes having worked for the State of Ohio in community mental health, private practice mental health counseling, and his practicum was at the Veteran's Affairs Hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Dr. King has received several awards including having received the Jane B. Aaron Dissertation Fellowship awarded by the National Association of Social Works in 2009, and In 2006 he received the John A. Hartford Foundation Pre-Dissertation Award - funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City. He has also been inducted into both the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and the Alpha Delta Mu National Social Work Honor Society.
